We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment company, and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

We are recruiting for a talented Cloud Engineer to help embed FinOps principles into our practices and help transform the business using the cloud. The role will be part of the Global Hosting Services Operations team supporting our entire infrastructure estate.

Why should you join Cambridge?

We're driven by a simple mission – to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest international levels of excellence. And that is why every year we give millions of people the support they need to unlock their potential.

We can achieve this because we are a united, vibrant, and respectful global community of empowered people. A community that embraces change, and continuously focuses on meeting our customers' needs. One that is flexible, by default, and one that gives everyone the support they need to be bold and take ownership. And by collaborating, and carefully listening to our customers and to each other, we'll keep moving forward, keep innovating, and keep finding better ways of doing things.

When you join Cambridge, you can get the best possible combination of a supportive and caring environment balanced with work that brings out the best in you. In addition, you will have access to learning and development opportunities and business tools essential for your role so you can perform at your peak.

What is in store for you?

The key to our work is our colleagues, whose shared commitment enables us to have an ever-greater impact. We are a united, vibrant, and respectful global community of people, and we ensure that every individual is recognised, listened to, and cared for. And because our impact is amplified when our people are empowered, we give everyone the opportunity to develop in their own way. Whether you want a career that's linear, or want to follow your own path, we'll support you, and help give you the resources and training you'll need to be bold and take ownership of what you do.

The role is pivotal to the success of our technology services, and there are no limits to the opportunities afforded to work with new and exciting technologies and highly talented people.

On top of these, working with Cambridge will also give you stability. We show our care for our people by allowing them to grow not just professionally but also personally. We promote work-life balance through flexible work schedules, hybrid work arrangements, and generous paid leaves. In addition, you will be entitled to our health care benefits, group life insurance, and robust wellbeing programs right on your first day.

How valuable is this role to us?

This role is intended – through embedding FinOps principles and best practices – to help transform the mindsets of our platform teams, get the maximum return of investment in the cloud, and speed up the delivery of products.

Your principal tasks include:

  • AWS cost analysis and reporting (actuals to budget / forecast, spend oversight, detection of key areas of waste and optimization, utilization rates, etc.)
  • Implement governance standards, including resource tagging, account structure, provisioning, permissions, and access
  • Conduct monthly cadence meetings with Product, Engineering, and Finance to identify and action potential cost optimization opportunities.

You will be expected to provide on-call and holiday support, rotating shifts supporting a 24x5 operational environment.

What makes you the ideal candidate?

We are looking for a candidate with strong understanding of technical software engineering concepts and AWS requirements for engineering capacity, attention to detail, innovative and collaborative thought leader to develop cost optimization strategies.

In addition, experience, knowledge or expertise in the following are an advantage:

  • Bachelor's degree in an analytical field (e.g. Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics). A minimum of five (5) years of experience in data analytics Amazon Web Services
  • Proficient knowledge of AWS needs, services/offerings and cost dashboards, reservation management, savings plans, and tagging.
  • Proven experience in partnering with stakeholders on cloud best practices and costing in order to influence business decisions.
  • Desired certification: AWS Certified Associate Solutions Architect and AWS Cloud Financial Management for Builders (if you do not have any of these, we will provide you the support to get certified)
