About The Role

We are looking for a dynamic Commissioning Editor with strong knowledge of scientific research and academic publishing to contribute to the profitability, quality, and impact of Cambridge University Press' STM journals in China by working with global STM journal publishing team to manage and drive high-quality content growth, by developing new products opportunities, supporting new acquisitions and launches, building a network of relationships with Chinese researchers in specific subject areas, and supporting open access initiatives.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the STM publishing team in China, with the opportunity to fully engage with and influence the reputation impact and growth of Cambridge's STM journals portfolio. Collaboration with Publishing, Production, Sales and Marketing in the UK, China and overseas, as well as key stakeholders in the markets is vital in ensuring that our publishing meets the needs of academic research community. The role-holder will have the opportunity to deepen further their existing thorough understanding of the scholarly publishing industry.

 

Content Development

  • Develop and execute an accelerated growth plan for existing journals to attract high quality content growth in China.
  • Develop immediate new product opportunities including launch, execution and open access initiatives to achieve portfolio development goals with global publishing colleagues together.
  • Take responsibility for the journals management, ensure KPIs for journals growth in quality and profitability are regularly monitored, reported and met.

Engagement and networking

  • Build a network of relationships with industry leaders in our prioritized subjects to enlarge Chinese editorial representation.
  • Liaise with the editors and other cross-functional teams to raising the Press's brand awareness and impact in STM publishing, as well as promote the journal to Chinese authors, editors, referees, e.g. by running author workshops, supporting social media activities.
  • Attend conferences to increase STM journals visibility and develop a network of contacts within relevant fields, and support sales and marketing colleagues in their outreach activities.

Relationships

  • Establish and foster excellent relationships with proprietors and journal editors based in China as required.
  • Understand Chinese researchers' needs, challenges and changes in the communities you serve, maintain strong connections with top researchers.
  • Build strong working relationships with editorial colleagues and other functional groups (OA, Marketing, Author support, Sales, etc.) to ensure the successful development of STM journals.

Business development

  • Monitor the needs and challenges of Chinese researchers, the transformation of open access, share insights and best practice in support of China strategy planning for relevant subject area.
  • Identify and implement new business model, new services opportunities.

 

About You

This role is ideal for an academically able person, interested in a broad range of STM subject areas, with outstanding communication, networking and project management skills. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of scholarly publishing, open access, the changing landscape in online publishing and the opportunities that brings for innovation and building smart solutions for meeting researchers' needs.

  • STM publishing experience with the research community, and in-depth knowledge of relevant subject area
  • An understanding of technologies, trends and developments in the area of online publishing and scholarly research
  • Build trust, communicate effectively, drive execution, focus on the customer, collaborate with others, solve problems creatively
  • Excellent project management, internal & external relationship management and networking skills with good record in academic engagement
  • Academic degree in an STM subject–preferably Ph.D. level
  • An outgoing, collaborative and target-driven personality
  • Self-starter with a positive, proactive, can-do approach to problem-solving, team player
  • Exceptional written communication skills and spoken English within an international environment
  • Willingness to travel as required
