QA Team Lead (Automation)

Job Purpose

The QA Team Lead's (Automation) principal role is to manage a team responsible for planning, designing, building, and executing the quality testing functions within their respective domain. They will be a highly proficient QA specialist in their own right and their duties will include directing the day to day work of their team of QA Analysts and to take responsibility for the overall testing strategy and project quality planning of their team/area.

The role involves working with a wide range of stakeholders: business “product” owners, Scrum Masters/project managers, development teams, infrastructure, and Business Users in order to shape and prioritize quality work and to resolve issues. The QA Team Lead must be comfortable in highly collaborative environments across multiple time zones and geographical locations.

Principal Accountabilities

Design:

• Creates Automation test plans, review data, procedures of automated test scripts.
• Defines standards for development of automated test scripts, deployment and reuse. Participates in formal reviews of business requirements and application designs.
• Ensures proper test coverage exists based on requirements & design spec.
• Shapes overall technical test strategy by proposing solutions & tools.

Documentation:

• Defines & implements QA process improvements & metrics on defect prevention.
• Creates QA procedures & user instructions to ensure reusable process & tools.
• Develops and/or maintains automated test plans & cases.

Development:

• Ensures test environment reflects business requirements for test execution
• Develops in-house test tools & harnesses where necessary; maintains overall test tools for regression testing.
• Participates in the selection of automated test development tools.

Testing:

• Executes - automated test scripts for most complex projects.
• Coordinates test schedules, work and resource plans; manages progress of all test activities against plan.
• Establishes testing entrance and exit criteria.
• Identifies and manages critical path of testing
• Ensures execution of project regression testing tasks.
• Trains others on testing techniques and automation.

Analysis:

• Identifies test issues and reports to stakeholder
• Manages regression tests for future projects.
• Defines and coordinates production verification and validation
• Perform risk analysis at project management or release level

Accountability:

• Directs most complex and creative cross-functional assignments and multiple phases of a project
• Develops departmental technical policies and procedures.

Leadership:

• Line management of a team of QA Analysts (Automation)
• Develops departmental technical policies and procedures.
• Manages and may initiate vendor relationships.
• Establishes full project life cycle plans for complex projects.
• Has responsibility for completion and implementation of multiple major initiatives.
• Responsible for meeting on-time and on-budget project goals.
• Advises on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects.
• Participates in the identification of and planning for future resource needs.
• Acts a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project issues.
• Provides technology solutions to daily issues and manages relationships to provide on-going customer service.
• Provides technical testing evaluation estimates on various projects.
• Execute vision, goals and direction of team/organization.

Knowledge and Experience

• Educated to degree level in a relevant IT, Software or QA related degree
• At least 6 years of software testing expertise gained across a breadth of testing specialisms, i.e. Manual (System Integration Testing and User Acceptance Testing), Automated (Test Complete, Selenium or house test tools), performance (JMeter)
• Expert Level in writing test code in multiple language (Java, Java Script)
• Expert Level of experience automating web and mobile application across multiple devices and platform using automation tools
• Experience with software testing and automated test techniques with strong focus on quality throughout the entire development cycle.
• Experience in reviewing code and give feedback for quality
• Experience of providing software quality processes within an Agile environment and to geographically dispersed customers.
• Strong team management and motivation skills including experience of the full range of line management duties.
• Experience of working within an Agile development process (Scrum or similar).
• A strong communicator, in both written and oral form, able to form effective working relationships with business colleagues at all levels.
• Required to keep up to date with the fast moving world of software quality testing as technologies and processes continue to evolve and to continually seek to improve our own approaches to deliver increased value and productivity.
