We are looking for a Java Developer, or Data Engineer working in Java, to come and help us build an event streaming platform from scratch for our English division in Manila. This job is an opportunity to enter a new team working on a green-field project in one of the most exciting spaces in data engineering right now – Apache Kafka.
Cambridge English specializes in helping teachers and students learn English as a second language. You would be part of a small, cross-functional, data engineering team. The team's focus is on connecting an ecosystem of microservices. Using Apache Kafka, we will connect a new suite of data-intensive services to change how people learn English using our products. You will extensively collaborate with Business and Technology colleagues from Cambridge, Manila, and other locations globally.
You would be working in an Agile Scrum framework. Our team members have ownership over how they approach their work and are empowered to solve problems before reporting back. We collaborate and support each other to solve problems and get stuff done. We believe in continuous professional development and provide opportunities for team members to learn new things and develop existing skills. You should be motivated, self-organised, and willing to upskill in the areas where you do not already have the desired experience.
You would report to a Lead Data Engineer and develop our event streaming platform and the associated custom tooling. Namely, a new internal Java library to provide an easy-to-use API for other developers to integrate with our event streaming platform.

You will work with the Data Architect in planning and designing the streaming platform. In addition, you will collaborate with other data engineers to design and deploy applications also with data warehouse engineers to process the data needed for a downstream data warehouse. You will also partner with our data analysts and scientists to provide input on the feasibility of requirements.
Specifically, you can expect to be writing a lot of code and doing a lot of design work. This is a green-field project so a lot of the code you write will be a first pass at the problem.
