Job Purpose

The Senior Software engineer's (Full stack) main role is to develop, maintain software applications by studying business operations, designing, creating, and installing software solutions. The Senior Software Engineer will work on an Agile environment with continuous integration process, unit testing and peer reviews.

Increasingly need to have knowledge of some computer programming languages and applications, this is due to the various work that they can be involved in.

The role also involves working with a range of stake holders: business “product” owners, Scrum Masters/project managers, other development teams, infrastructure, service desk, and the Press architectural team in order to design software solutions and to resolve issues.

Principal Duties


  • Work closely with team leads, business owners, analysts, project managers/scrum masters, and relevant other parties to understand and shape needs for trouble shooting of existing development.
  • Assist the Development Team Lead / Solution Architects with analysis and design of the over-all solution architecture.
  • Take charge of designing some components of an overall solution.
  • Creates elements of the software specification document set including: Class Diagrams, sequence Diagrams, and DB design amongst others.
  • Write project briefs, proposals, and implement plans where required and on small to medium sized projects for providing initial estimates.


  • Code, test and troubleshoot software programs using the suited hardware, database, and programming tech.
  • Provide assistance to QA and service desk personnel as needed to diagnose system problems and to review/repair legacy code if required.
  • Review changes in code and the environment to understand and minimize negative impact on system performance.
  • Work closely with the infrastructure, build and release, database, and other related teams to ensure swift and efficient deployment of code releases to live (production) environments.


  • Supervise junior or mid-level software engineers to complete tasks within a given project/maintenance task.
  • Prepare reports and analysis regarding issues, incident in progress, opposing ideas and apt proposal or conclusions.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant IT/Software related degree.
  • 4-5+ years of software development expertise within an area of Press tech including: ava, PHP, Node.js, Vue.js, Html, Css, JavaScript, Rest, SOAP, Xml JQuery, Apache.
  • Experience of data manipulation, tuning, and performance work across a range of industry databases including: Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB.
  • Accustomed with using industry standard tools and practices in the Software Development including SVN and GIT source code control systems.
  • Experience of working within an Agile development process (Scrum or similar).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; able to communicate, with colleagues of all levels across the Press.
  • Able to supervise junior or mid-level software engineers on day to day tasks, supporting their development and taking charge of their tasks.
  • Solid solution design, analysis and documentation skills plus experience of Web infrastructure and related technology areas and modern day “DevOps” engineering practices and processes.
