Software Development Team Lead

Job Purpose

The Software Development Team Lead's principle role is to manage a development team responsible for designing, building, and maintaining software applications in their respective domain. They will be a highly proficient software engineer in their own right and their duties will include leading the day to day work of their team of engineers, designing solutions, allocating work packages, and being responsible for the overall quality of delivered software by their team (which will entail putting in place code quality review processes with the Development Team Lead as the final checkpoint).The role involves working with a wide range of stakeholders: business “product” owners, Scrum Masters/project managers, other development teams, infrastructure, service desk, and the Press architectural team in order to shape and prioritize work and to resolve issues. The Team Lead must be comfortable in highly collaborative environments across multiple time zones and geographical locations.

Principal Accountabilities

DESIGN

• Work closely with business owners, analysts, project managers/scrum masters, and relevant other parties to understand and shape requirements for new development / troubleshooting of existing development.
• Provide application solution design, including relevant technical documentation, to meet the business requirements. This may require working with group based Solution Architects to shape design and at times seeking central architectural office steer on enterprise wide aspects of solutions.To write project briefs, proposals, and implementation plans where required.

DELIVER

• Responsible for the delivery of the development aspects of the project by their development team. This will require close working with the Scrum Master/Project Manager (where assigned) to ensure that the work is delivered on time and on budget.
• Responsible for ensuring the quality of code delivered by the team complies with in–house and/or industry standards and that a strong peer review process and other relevant practices are in place across the development process.
• Review changes in code and the environment to understand and minimise negative impact on system performance.
• Work closely with the infrastructure, build and release, database, and other related teams to ensure swift and efficient deployment of code releases to live(production) environments.

MANAGE

• Perform the full range of line management duties for their team members including performance management (PRS process), hiring, and training/development of team members.
• Provide recommendations to management concerning issues of programmer productivity and software development management.
• Do performance evaluations of subordinates and make the final recommendations for promotion or advancement.Prepare reports and analysis regarding issues, incident in progress, opposing ideas and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
• Complete daily organizational functions like worksheet report.

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT

• To ensure a culture of continual improvement is in place within their team and to search for new ways of improving the development process including evaluating new tools and working practices.
• To maintain –and actively seek to utilise –subject matter expertise across a broad range of technology trends and domains (to include electronic publishing, web & mobile development, and social media trends).

Knowledge and Experience

• Educated to degree level in a relevant IT/Software related degree.
• To be considered an expert, with at least6years of development expertise, across a breadth of web technologies. Current Press technology sets include: Java, HTML, JEE, JSF ccs, Spring , struts, PHP, Laravel, Concrete5, Node.js, Angular.js, JavaScript. Ideally to have gained industry certification in one or more of these areas.
• Significant experience of data manipulation, tuning, and performance work across a range of industry databases including: Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, and Neo4J.
• To be comfortable with using industry standard tools and practices in the Software Development world including SVN and Git source code control systems.
• Experience of managing across the whole Software development lifecycle within a web development domain and ideally gained in an Agile development process
